Nearly 30,000 Sign Petition Against Proposed Famine Sitcom

There's been quite a lot of fuss recently about Channel 4's proposed new sitcom, based in famine-time Ireland. The Irish writer behind the show, Hugh Travers, described the concept as a version of "Shameless in famine Ireland", in conversation with the Irish Times. This has sparked outrage across Ireland and further afield, with Fairlie Gordon from Glasgow starting a petition against the show on the 1st of January. The petition has gotten just under 30,000 signatures in the space of 5 days, with many taking to social media to share their support.

However, a few cheeky chappies have set up an opposing petition, asking that Channel 4 does not "bow to pressure from those calling for its censorship". Claiming that classics such as MASH, Good Morning Vietnam and Dad's Army would never have been made had we been this over-sensitive. So far the petition has only received 84 supporters. Either way, a lot of people have been offended by this proposed new show, and it will be interesting to see how this one pans out...
