Bee Pollen is well known in the world of super-foods but when we see it for sale we tend to run the other way because we don't know what to do with it! Here is the low down on these little golden nuggets and why we all need to start sprinkling them on everything!
Bee Pollen is one of nature's most complete sources of nutrition. The bees have a natural charge which attracts the pollen to stick to their furry bodies. So much work has gone into each individual grain by the time it can be used as a food source. Each grain is taken from the plant, mixed with nectar and the bees' own digestive enzymes. This food is collected by the worker bees then used by the queen bee to feed the babies. The pollen provides energy, protein and nutrients to meet the nutrition requirements of the hive.
Bee pollen is protein rich, contains all essential amino acids and contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals. It is especially high in B-vitamins, which help our bodies turn food into fuel. It is particularly high in folic acid, which is an essential vitamin especially for women of childbearing age, planning to get pregnant and for the first trimester of pregnancy. It also contains minerals that help us break down fats as well as improving brain function, and it is an excellent source of iron. The benefits are never ending, start eating bee pollen and not only will notice an improvement in your energy levels, but you'll have a bulletproof immune system and glowing skin to boot.
Bee pollen comes in tablet, powder and liquid form. However, it is best to get the actual granules that the bee has worked so hard making! The granules have a sweet taste, like honey. The best and yummiest way to incorporate bee pollen into your diet is to sprinkle it on smoothies, juices, oats, yoghurt or granola. It is best to take it with food and in the morning time. I usually sprinkle it on my morning juice or smoothie, the fruit and vegetable fibres activate the pollen faster, and cleanse the colon to get your morning off to a good start.
Bee pollen newbies should make sure to start gradually. Start by trying ½ a teaspoon and gradually increase to a tablespoon. Why? For people who suffer from allergies or have a history of hay fever, bee pollen can give you similar symptoms and therefore it will take time to build up your tolerance. Similarly, if you have a history of anaphylactic shock or are highly allergic to bee stings, it's best to avoid bee pollen.
1 small frozen banana
1 hand full of spinach
1 hand full of frozen berries
Half a ripe avocado
1 cup of almond milk
1 tablespoon of spirulina
Blend all the above ingredient together. Then top it off with 1 teaspoon of goji berries & 1/2 – 1 tablespoon of bee pollen.
