New Dublin App Pays For Taxis Immediately Without Cash, Card Or Phone

Get ready to ‘Flag’ taxis as world’s safest app comes to Dublin.

A new taxi app designed for students, called Flag is launching in Dublin City this December. It is the only app in the world that allows you to travel and pay for taxis with no phone, cash or bank card while ensuring the driver gets paid.

Flag was invented by NUI Galway student Richie Commins, it started out as a college project previously known as Dash (Driving All Students Home). Richie began to research the idea of getting students home safely while paying drivers without cash, phones or bank cards.

His team has created an innovative app that boasts pin point location tracking and accurate Estimated Time of Arrival as well as extra safety features such as wallet-less payment (the only taxi app in the world providing this service).

The app is available in the app stores as ‘Flag – The Taxi App’. It is similar to other taxi apps that allow you to hail a taxi via the app except during registration users add an ID like photo to their profile and create a 4 digit pin to secure their account for emergencies (the wallet-less feature). 

For situations where a user's phone is dead, they simply flag a taxi off the street, tell the driver their name and enter their 4 digit pin on the driver app. The user’s photo appears on the driver’s phone to confirm their identity before been taken from A to B.

Payment is processed from the user’s pre-registered card as normal upon arrival at the destination. Flag started as a couple of hundred students testing a basic platform and has since gained support from Enterprise Ireland, Nissan, AIB and many other organisations. 

Founder of Flag, Commins said, "The app is ready so we’re focusing our time on registering drivers before we launch in December. We believe we have the best taxi app in the country so we’re excited to finally bring the new app to Dublin."

An Garda Siochana also supported the project from the early days through their Campus Watch Programme.
